This was the case with Hanah Davis, who in January 1724 ran away from her master, Dr. George Allen, a man who violently abused his servants. For a whole year Hanah Davis avoided recapture, during which time Allen invested the considerable sum of thirty pounds in a search for her. In autumn 1724 Davis persuaded Bartholomew McGowan, an Irish servant, to join her. Together with an accomplice named John McCormack, the outlaws stole goods valued at over fiftyfour pounds from McGowan’s mistress, the widow Ann Metcalf.
These co-existing moral codes found some of their most concrete expressions in intimate relationships that clearly disregarded state and church definitions of appropriate unions. White women who engaged in extramarital liaisons already posed a significant challenge to norms of female deference, but this challenge was exacerbated when a woman’s partner was black. As slavery spread in eighteenth-century North Carolina, lawmakers wrote increasingly detailed statutes that adjudicated race relations and prohibited interracial interactions of all kinds, including sex and, more especially, marriage.
