The airport was behind schedule. Planes were waiting to land. The control tower did not want more delays. Flight 90 to Fort Lauderdale was cleared for takeoff. Crash Flight 90 never made it to Florida. Less than a minute after takeoff, Flight 90 was already in serious trouble. The 737 dipped down onto a bridge over the Potomac River. This is a busy commuter route. Traffic was moving very slowly because of the snow. The plane skimmed over the road. It smashed into six cars and a truck. It tore off a large section of railing.

Radar operators on the Vincennes reported an airplane coming toward them. A regular passenger airplane will climb steadily during takeoff. But this plane was coming fast toward them. The captain thought the ship was under attack. The target was shot down. But it wasn’t a fighter plane. It was a regular passenger plane. The radar operators had made a mistake. 290 people were on board. All were killed. The Navy admitted it was a tragic accident. The American government eventually paid $62 million to the victims’ families.

Flight 90 used this equipment. But an hour passed after the plane was de-iced. All the evidence pointed to icing as the cause of the crash. But this was not the whole story. The investigation showed something else. The engines were not operating fully. Sometimes slush can get inside the engine itself. The engines will still work. But they will not work as well. The 737 had engine anti-icing equipment. This would have solved the problem. But the crew did not turn it on! Their mistake along with the icy weather caused the crash.
