But it’s anyone, it’s coaches, it’s scientists and it’s athletes themselves. I would also include my brother Dave along with Jeremy Moody [at the time lead strength and conditioning coach in north east region EIS] and Terry Lomax, who was UK Athletics performance manager for the north east region for some time. While Jared certainly remains open to outside influence, it is striking how well-grounded his practice is in his own values. With that proposition, we are back to the principles that Jared stated at the beginning of this interview: Drive, determination, motivation, pride, living and breathing it, never accepting that good was good enough.
I guess as a younger Dave Clark, this is where my error possibly lay. Because straight away, my answer would come out: Why not? But now, I’ve learned to take people along the road with me, so I don’t come back so hard and fast with my responses. In a high-performance environment, a more directive style can sometimes be required. But even then, the ability to listen and take people along with you is still key to that. It is these influencing skills that have refined Dave’s approach and enabled him to work successfully with some of Team GB’s leading athletes.
